How to Keep Your Apartment Cool Without Spiking Your Energy Bill

As temperatures rise, so can your energy bills, especially if you’re relying heavily on air conditioning to stay cool. But keeping your apartment comfortable during the summer doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a few smart adjustments, renters can beat the heat while keeping energy use (and costs) under control.

Here’s how to keep your apartment cool without breaking the bank.

1. Close the Blinds During the Day

Sunlight streaming in may brighten your space, but it also raises the indoor temperature significantly. Up to 30% of unwanted heat comes from windows.

Quick tip:

Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day (usually 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to block out heat and keep your space cooler naturally.

2. Use Fans Strategically

Fans don’t lower the temperature, but they do make you feel cooler by circulating air.

Best practices:

  • Place a fan across from a window to push hot air out.
  • Use ceiling fans (if available) counterclockwise to create a breeze.
  • Try placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan for a DIY cooling hack.

3. Unplug Heat-Producing Electronics

TVs, computers, lamps, and even chargers give off heat when plugged in, even if they’re not in use.

Try this:

  • Unplug unused devices during the day.
  • Avoid using the oven or stove and instead, opt for cold meals or the microwave instead.

4. Swap Out Light Bulbs

Old incandescent bulbs give off a surprising amount of heat. Switching to LED bulbs can help keep your space cooler and lower your electricity use at the same time.

5. Seal Air Leaks

If cool air is escaping and hot air is creeping in, your A/C unit will have to work harder, which will cost you more.

Do this:

  • Check windows and doors for gaps or drafts.
  • Use removable weather stripping or door draft stoppers.
  • Report broken seals or damaged windows to your landlord or property manager.

6. Adjust Your Thermostat Wisely

If you use central air or a window unit, don’t set it too low. You can stay comfortable without freezing the space – and your wallet.

Energy-saving tip:

Set the thermostat to around 76–78°F (24–25°C) when home, and a bit higher when away.

7. Sleep Cooler at Night

Evenings can be tough without A/C, but there are ways to keep cool:

  • Use light, breathable sheets.
  • Point a fan toward an open window for airflow.
  • Try a cool shower before bed to lower your body temperature.

Stay Cool and Save

You don’t need to choose between comfort and cost. With a few simple changes, renters can keep their apartments cool all summer long without the high energy bills.
